Dr. Upali Banagala is a distinguished Sri Lankan Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with extensive experience in clinical practice, medical education, and healthcare leadership. He received his medical education from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo, and later specialized in orthopaedic surgery.
Throughout his career, Dr. Banagala served at the National Hospital of Sri Lanka, where he played a significant role in advancing orthopaedic surgery and training postgraduate medical professionals. He has been widely recognized as a dedicated academic and mentor to many surgical trainees.
Dr. Banagala has held several key professional positions, including:
President of the College of Surgeons of Sri Lanka (2006)
Leadership roles within the Sri Lanka Orthopaedic Association
Chairman and member of the Board of Study in Surgery
Director General of the Sports Medicine Unit in Sri Lanka
He has also contributed to academic publishing and research and served as Editor-in-Chief of the Sri Lankan Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery, further supporting the development of surgical knowledge and practice in the country.
In addition to his government service, Dr. Banagala has continued to contribute to healthcare through the private sector and professional education initiatives, including work with leading hospitals in Colombo.
