Bachelor of Education(Hons) in Primary Education Programme - Overview


Bachelor of Education Honours in Primary Education degree programme is designed with the objective of incorporating emerging areas in Primary Education, innovative methods and strategies and sophisticated technologies for learning/teaching with a view to cater to the changing needs of local and international education system. The final outcome of this program is to produce a full-fledged Primary Teacher with versatile characteristics and professional competencies needed for the advancements in the field of primary education.

 

The degree program designed by Lyceum Campus; incorporates courses categorized into five areas; namely, Professional Studies (PS), Academic Studies (AS), Foundation Studies (FS), Elective Studies (ES) and Field Experience (FE) amounting to 130 credits in total.

Scholarships are available based on A/Level results from National, Cambridge, or Edexcel examinations. Students who achieve 3 B grades or above at A/Level are eligible for a 50% scholarship. Students who achieve 3 C grades or above are eligible for a 20% scholarship. Terms and conditions apply.

The curriculum spans 8 semesters and includes Philosophical and Psychological Bases in Primary Education, Primary Mathematics, Language Studies in English, Environmental Studies, Health and Physical Education, Aesthetic Education, Inclusive Practices, Research Methods in Education, ICT for the Primary Classroom, Counselling in Primary School, Religious Studies, and Second Language Studies. Progressive Teaching Practice components are embedded across multiple semesters.

Yes. Teaching practice is a core and progressive component of the programme. It includes Primary School Observation, Micro Teaching sessions, Teaching Practicum I, II, and III across multiple semesters, and culminates in a full Teaching Practicum in Semester 8 worth 8 credit points. The programme also ends with a Research Dissertation in the final semester.

The programme is ideal for working teachers who want to earn a nationally recognised degree while continuing to teach, as well as A/Level graduates who want to pursue a professional career in primary education. The weekend delivery model makes it one of the few full degree programmes in Sri Lanka that working educators can realistically complete without taking a career break.

Graduates can pursue careers as primary school teachers in government and private schools, curriculum developers, educational coordinators, school administrators, and education consultants. The UGC and Ministry of Education recognition strengthens eligibility for government school appointments and enhances career progression in the private school sector.

The programme is delivered physically at Lyceum Campus on weekends. This schedule is designed specifically for working teachers and professionals who cannot attend weekday classes. All teaching is conducted face-to-face, ensuring direct interaction between students and lecturers throughout the 4-year programme.

The programme is privately offered by Lyceum Campus but is recognised by the Ministry of Education and UGC of Sri Lanka, which means it carries the same national recognition as equivalent degrees from other recognised institutions. It is not delivered by a government university but it is recognised by the bodies that govern teacher qualifications in Sri Lanka.
