Dr. Ranjan Dias
Consultant Paediatric Surgeon / Medical Educator - Academic Leader
Dr. Ranjan Dias is a distinguished Sri Lankan medical professional, academic, consultant paediatric surgeon and medical educator with extensive experience in clinical practice, higher education, postgraduate medical training and academic leadership.
He obtained his MBBS from the University of Colombo with Second Class Honours in 1979, including distinctions in Anatomy and Physiology. He subsequently obtained his MS in Surgery from the University of Colombo in 1986 and FRCS (Edinburgh) in 1988. His postgraduate training included Basic Surgical Training at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, London, and specialised Paediatric Surgical Training at Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham.
Dr. Dias served as Senior Lecturer in Paediatric Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo, from 1992 to 2020, while also serving as Honorary Consultant Paediatric Surgeon at the University Paediatric Surgical Unit, Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children. Prior to this, he held several academic and clinical positions at the University of Ruhuna, including Head of the Department of Surgery. He also served as Senior Lecturer in Surgery at the International Medical University, Malaysia, during his sabbatical leave.
Throughout his career, Dr. Dias has made significant contributions to medical education, curriculum development, postgraduate surgical training and academic administration. At the University of Colombo, he served as Director of the Medical Education Development and Research Centre (MEDARC), Faculty Representative to the University Senate, Chairman of the Trauma Module, Convener of the Nephro-Urology Module and Warden of Blomfontein Hostel.
His contribution to postgraduate medical education includes serving as Chairman of the Board of Study in Surgery and as an examiner, chief examiner and assessor for postgraduate medical examinations. He also served as Chairman of the Academic Affairs, Accreditation and Examination Committee of the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine (PGIM) from 2019 to 2023.
Dr. Dias has held prominent positions within the medical profession, including President of the College of Surgeons of Sri Lanka in 2016 and Founder President of the Sri Lankan Association of Paediatric Surgeons (SLAPS). He is also a Life Member of the Sri Lanka Medical Association and the College of Surgeons of Sri Lanka.
His academic contributions include 14 publications in peer-reviewed journals and seven scientific communications published as abstracts, covering areas of paediatric surgery, child health, surgical conditions, healthcare and medical education.
Beyond his academic and clinical work, Dr. Dias has demonstrated a strong commitment to community service. He currently serves as President of the Colombo Friend in Need Society, as well as Surgeon Commodore of the Volunteer Naval Force, Sri Lanka Navy, and Patron of the Sri Lankan Association of Paediatric Surgeons.
With his extensive experience in paediatric surgery, medical education, postgraduate training, academic leadership and professional service, Dr. Ranjan Dias brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the advancement of healthcare education and professional development in Sri Lanka.
