A pioneer of modern urology in Sri Lanka, Professor Perera has introduced and established numerous advanced endourological, laparoscopic, reconstructive and oncological procedures, including PCNL, uretero-renoscopy and laser lithotripsy, laparoscopic nephrectomy, HoLEP, radical cystectomy, urethroplasty, bowel neobladder reconstruction and radical prostatectomy.

He served as Senior Consultant Urological Surgeon at the National Hospital of Sri Lanka from 1995 to 2022 and played a significant role in the development of specialist urological and renal transplantation services. He was instrumental in establishing the Institute of Urology and Nephrology at the National Hospital of Sri Lanka in 2021. He is currently Professor in Urology at the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine, University of Colombo, and has previously served as Chairman of the Board of Study in Urology.

Professor Perera has held several prestigious professional leadership positions, including President of the Sri Lanka Association of Urological Surgeons, President of the College of Surgeons of Sri Lanka, and President of the Sri Lanka Medical Library. He is an Honorary Fellow of the College of Surgeons of Sri Lanka.

A highly respected postgraduate educator, he has trained 24 specialist registrars who have gone on to become consultant urological surgeons in Sri Lanka and overseas, as well as more than 300 general surgical registrars. He has published and presented over 100 scientific papers and authored two books. His continuing contribution to urological practice, surgical education and innovation has had a lasting impact on the development of specialist urology in Sri Lanka.
