Prof Bavantha Gamage is a Professor in Surgery, Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura and a consultant surgeon, Colombo South Teaching hospital Kalubowila; the main teaching hospital of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. Hospital is located within one Km from the Lyceum Campus. Prof Gamage is a well-known Laparoscopic and Endoscopic surgeon, and is the current President of the Sri Lanka Association of Minimal Access and Digital Surgeons of Sri Lanka. He is the Secretary General of the SAARC Surgical Care society and also a council member of the College of Surgeons of Sri Lanka.
He led the surgical team from Colombo South Teaching hospital that won the Best Surgical team of the Year 2018 among all South Asian competing teams including India For BMJ Awards South Asia 2018.
He has delivered following Orations in the international and national scientific forums :
- Sir A.M.De Silva Oration 2018 at the Annual Academic Sessions of the College of surgeons of Sri Lanka and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

- Topic: Modified Enhanced Recovery After Colorectal Surgery – Outcome of novel experience in colorectal surgery in Sri Lanka.
He is also involved in training international medical graduates from James Cook University Australia and Gothenburg University in Sweden and holds the following positions :
- Member of board of examiners in the Membership examination in Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh
- Member of Board of examiners in the MD(Surgery) exit examination of the Post Graduate Institute of Medicine in Sri Lanka.
- Supervisor of Medical Undergraduates of the James Cook University, Queensland, Australia
- Empowering and Enriching the Organizational Lifestyle of our Team members to ensure a MEANINGFUL CHANGE in each of their lives.
- Supervisor of Medical Undergraduates of the University of Gothenburg, Sweden,
- Member of Board of Directors of the State Pharmaceutical corporation, Sri Lanka
- Member of the advisory committee to the nursing school of the Institute of nursing and health care studies (INHCS)
He has written following book chapters
- Book chapter on ‘’Recent Advances in Surgery Laparoscopic Surgery’’ in ‘’Recent Advances in Surgery 32’’ edited by Irving Taylor and Colin Johnson published by The Royal Society of Medicine Press Limited in 2009
- National guide lines in the management of gastrointestinal bleeding published by the ministry of health in 2010
- Chapter on ‘’Reprocessing of Endoscopic and Laparoscopic instruments’’ in the ‘’Operating Room Basics’’ edited by Jaliya Lokuketagoda and Anurudda Abeygunasekara in 2013
